The Value of a Child
No one who loves life and fears God would ever question the value of a child. Biblicists have, since its onset, opposed abortion because of the value of a child. As parents, we stand accountable to God for our children because “children are an heritage of the Lord!” They are on loan to us from God. Because we value children, we feed and clothe them. We provide shelter and physical protections. But do we make every effort to show them, from the Bible, how they can know God? Do we endeavor to show them how to be saved from sin and assured of life eternal? Some of you perhaps think that a child cannot be saved or need not be saved. Dear friend, as soon as a child is capable of understanding that he is a sinner, he needs to and can be saved.
Dr. R. A. Torrey said, “It is almost the easiest thing in the world to lead a child from 5-10 years of age to a definite acceptance of Christ. Matthew Henry (Bible Commentator) was saved at age 11 and Polycarp (early church father) was saved at age 9. Parents, I urge you to obey the command of Christ in Matthew 19:14 “Suffer (allow) little children, and forbid them not, to come to me…” Let us assist you. Enroll your children age 4 through grade 6 in our Vacation Bible Time.
Ladies Fellowship by Nancy Schwarten:
The ladies and teenage girls had a fabulous time at the Olcott’s home on July 27th. The evening began with a game of volleyball in their pool. After a hot, humid day, it was a cool, refreshing treat! Following this, we had a time of fellowship with the Lord. Joan Olcott gave the devotion on “B’s for a happy relationship.”
The Mother/Daughter Banquet will be held on September the 17th, so mark your calendar and set the 17th aside. The committees in charge are:
- Food – Joan Olcott, Nancy Schwarten
- Decoration – Nadine Gerou, Peggy Wright
- Program – Janice Clement, LaVonne Eckman
Shortly after I became a new Christian, I read Psalm 101. At that time, I claimed this Psalm as the “Housewife’s Psalm.” By adding this Psalm to your early morning reading, your hearts will be kept close to the Lord as you set about keeping your home for the Lord and your families.
News from the Pews by Pastor Eckman:
- Baptisms – Recently 6 followed Christ in believer’s baptism. They were: Mrs. Paula Darvin, Pinky Darvin, Ken Darvin, Charity Kraft, Laura Olivas, and Chad Eckman. We rejoice with each one in this decision.
- Recent Speakers – In my absence while on vacation, many of our men have preached in my place. Thanks, men. I appreciate your willingness. They were: Pastor Harry Clement, Jerry Wilhite, Robin Mott, Peter Brock, and John Krytkowski. In June we enjoyed the ministry of Evangelist Neil Cadwell. We thank the Lord for good attendance and some important decisions that were made.
- School is starting in just one month. Many of our youth are enrolled at the East Delavan Baptist Academy on Hwy. 50 east of Delavan. We thank God for the opportunity of Christian education for our youth. School this year begins September 7th and parent orientation is held August 21st at 7:00 PM or August 28th at 7:00 PM.

Sunday School Report by John Olcott:
My, how the time flies when you are having fun! The Sunday School picnic was a complete success – it was rained in! We enjoyed the Pensacola Bible College Men’s Ensemble who brought us skits, singing, and God’s Word.
It is now a proven fact that the men of the church bake the best pies – Chuck Henderson baked a delicious lemon meringue (which brought a first) followed by Gregg Kraft with a chocolate delight! You don’t know what you missed!

Many people will not give their lives entirely over to Christ because they are afraid of where He might lead them. I am thankful that the Lord doesn’t just send us some place, He goes with us. In March, 1981, I felt the Lord leading me to South Side Baptist School in Oaklawn, Illinois. The school seemed great, but it was in a suburb of Chicago. Chicago!?! I was used to little Elkhorn. The thought of a big city was scary. But that was where God wanted me to go. He says in Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, He it is that doth go with thee, He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Now I have lived in Chicagoland for nearly a year and I really like it here at South Side. God makes us happy in His will. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord; and he delighteth in his way” Psalm 37:23.
